Educators need a smarter writing program now. It's a good thing we saw that coming 15 years ago.

How do The Writers' Express® (
WEXTM) teachers develop motivated, technically strong writers and critical thinkers, a whole class at a time?

They meet students where they are, developing the right skills in the right order through a process of targeted, authentic feedback to frequent writing practice.  We don’t believe in just selling textbooks and teachers’ editions; WEX coaching and professional development helps teachers acquire lifelong skills in differentiating instruction, managing class time, and providing strategic, motivating feedback to impact students’ writing skills from day one.

WEX immediately begins to deliver sustained, dramatic results, even for students with very limited skills.  Our work in New York City and Springfield, MA (click the links to view the case studies) reflect the level of achievement WEX is helping to drive with districts, charter organizations and educational networks around the country.  Furthermore, as WEX students learn to recognize the way skilled writers use words for emotional impact or to present a compelling argument, they become stronger readers as well.

Like many of the best instructional programs, WEX grew out of the classroom.  WEX was founded in 1994 by Deborah Reck and Arthur Unobskey, two history teachers whose students were struggling because they couldn’t read or write well.  Reck and Unobskey quickly learned there were no satisfactory answers to questions like, “What is the best sequence of writing skills, and what are they?” and, “How can you tell that students have truly mastered the skills that mattered?”  Thus began a rigorous process of classroom observation and refinement of process and curriculum.

The quality of the WEX program was a key factor in a decision by the U. S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences to award $2.2 million to the Education Development Center, a leading research organization, to evaluate the effectiveness of the WEX Grades 3-12 curriculum and methods.

In October, 2009, Wireless Generation acquired The Writers’ Express; you can read the press release here.
