School of One
Re-imagining the traditional education model.
Put Students at the Center of the Learning Experience
The New York City Department of Education’s School of One turns the century-old model of teacher-centric classroom lectures on its head. Instead, it teaches the concepts students need to learn at precisely the right moment, using the most effective teaching style for that student, every day, in a real school.
How Does it Work?
At School of One, unique "playlists" for each student are developed daily. They are based on the sequential skills on which students need to focus at that moment in time, and the learning modalities to which they respond best — from teacher lecture, small-group instruction, virtual tutor, and more. School of One supports teachers with technology that adapts and delivers focused instruction at the appropriate rate of progress for each student to master the skills on their playlist.
Tell Me More
School of One adapts daily to students’ needs without requiring a cast of thousands to pull it off. The initiative is exploring what can happen when diverse modalities of instruction are incorporated into school, when the traditional divisions of labor among educators are re-thought, and when powerful analytics tools are combined with frequent, fine-grained formative assessment to sequence a child’s learning experiences.
Wireless Generation and School of One
Wireless Generation is the lead partner to the New York City Department of Education in the creation and ongoing evolution of School of One. We developed the algorithm at the heart of School of One, which manages learning trajectories, instructional content, teaching modalities, and resource allocation. The initiative, now in three NYC schools, continues to expand.
