Often referred to as the "DIBELS test" or "DIBELS testing", the assessment DIBELS® (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) offers individually administered, standardized, measures of early literacy for students in grades K-6. Strong DIBELS training curriculum or DIBELS Professional Development is instrumental to successful adoption of DIBELS. The DIBELS, sometimes identified as the "DIBELS test" or "DIBELS testing", consists of a series of targeted activities or "probes," each designed to provide a diagnostic measure of a fundamental early literacy skill. DIBELS training should be lead by a qualified literacy assessment specialist with in-depth experience in data informed decision-making.
Created by Roland H. Good III, Ph.D. and Ruth A. Kaminski, Ph.D. of the University of Oregon, and based on 15 years of scientific research, the DIBELS is designed to assess the Five Big Ideas of Early Reading: Phonological Awareness, Alphabetic Principle, Fluency with Connected Text, Vocabulary Development, and Reading Comprehension. DIBELS training is an effective way to learn appropriate administration of these measures.
Frequently labeled as the "DIBELS test" or "DIBELS testing", DIBELS is the most widely selected assessment for meeting Reading First requirements, having been included in 45 state Reading First plans. DIBELS has also been cited by IDEA for its excellent compatibility with Reading First.
Wireless Generation worked closely with the authors of DIBELS to create a handheld computer version of this trusted, proven assessment. mCLASS®:DIBELS®, powered by Wireless Generation's innovative mCLASS® software, delivers a complete assessment solution that combines ease of administration with Web-based reporting, analysis, data management and progress monitoring tools.
To begin, the teacher simply taps a name on the student roster, which has been pre-loaded by Wireless Generation. Taking into account the student's grade and the time of year, the system automatically selects the appropriate set of probes.
