Created by Roland H. Good III, Ph.D. and Ruth A. Kaminski, Ph.D. of the University of Oregon, the DIBELS® assessment offers standardized, individually administered measures of early literacy. DIBELS (The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) is a powerful, strongly predictive assessment designed to identify and provide targeted scaffolding to at-risk readers. The DIBELS assessment is based on years of scientific research and cited for its excellent compatibility with the requirements of Reading First.
The DIBELS assessment provides educators with cut points and goals that have a high predictive validity. Based on research that tracked the performance of tens of thousands of students over multiple years and hundreds of thousands of assessments, the DIBELS assessment provides local norms (percentiles based on district) as well as system-wide norms (percentiles based on all 798,000 students who have already been assessed). The DIBELS assessment aims to develop the reading skills of children performing below benchmark to grade-level readers via continuous progress monitoring and provide clear goals as a target for intervention.
Using its patent-pending mCLASS® software, Wireless Generation offers a handheld computer version of the DIBELS assessment that makes the assessment process easier, faster, and more valuable to teachers and administrators.
mCLASS®:DIBELS® software delivers all of the capabilities of the paper-based assessment, with additional tools for streamlined administration, immediate results, and deep analysis of scores. A teacher uses a handheld computer when administering the assessment, receives instant results on the handheld, and after "syncing" the handheld to a computer with the push of one button, can access a variety of reports and instructional planning tools on a secure Web site.
