How We Started

Wireless Generation is an innovator at the crossroads of education and technology. In 2000, Larry Berger and Greg Gunn (who met as Rhodes Scholars) founded Wireless Generation after observing teachers in New York elementary classrooms and concluding that handheld technology could help automate activities that took time away from meaningful teacher-student interaction.

Their research found that teachers spent a significant amount of time administering paper-based guided reading assessments. We responded by creating the mCLASS® platform and our first product, mCLASS®:Reading, which uses a handheld device to automate reading records in guided reading programs.

We then reached out to leading university researchers about applying the mCLASS platform to their popular phonemic awareness and oral fluency assessments. As a result, we partnered with these researchers to offer handheld-to-Web versions of their early literacy assessments, mCLASS®:DIBELS® and mCLASS®:TPRI®.

Where We Are Now

Today, Wireless Generation is the leading provider of assessment tools in thousands of classrooms across the country. We offer the most handheld-to-Web versions of research-based assessments, and we work closely with assessment authors and leading educators to ensure our products address the latest innovations in technology and academic research.

While Wireless Generation now has nearly 300 employees, our key goal remains the continued improvement of schools through technology. Our products and services help educators respond to challenges with the tools necessary to have an immediate and sustained impact on student achievement. Our assessment, data analysis, and professional services offerings create a comprehensive cycle of improvement touching all the critical factors that affect student learning.
